About the Group Space

When you are a member of a group in your Canvas course, your group will have a separate space in the course to work. This is called your group space. Your group space is only accessible by your group members and your instructor.

Exploring Group Tools

In your group space, you will have access to a number of different tools—similar to those your instructor may use in your course.

Group Tools:

  • Home displays a feed of recent activity in your group.
  • Announcements: Like course announcements, you have the ability to communicate with your group about important information like meeting times or upcoming assignments.
  • Pages can include text, video, and links to files and other course or group content.
    • Pages are listed in default alphabetical order. So, you may want to decide on a naming convention that allows your group to keep pages organized.
  • People: See a list of your group members.
  • Discussions are the place for ongoing, back-and-forth conversations among your group.
    • Any group member can start a discussion, which could lead to multiple threads addressing the same topics. You may want to decide together on a structure ("Do we want one big discussion forum where we talk about everything, or do we want separate discussions for different topics like our roles, implementation ideas, and a meeting schedule?").
  • Files allow you to store documents, images, and media within Canvas. You can upload one or multiple files, preview files, and view details about your files.
    • It's a good idea to keep files organized in sub-folders so things are easy to find.
  • Conferences: Allows you to set up video meetings with your group members.
  • Collaborations lets you create shared documents, slides, or spreadsheets in Google or Office 365 that all group members can edit and update.
