Peer Review in Canvas

Connection to peers: group activities

A peer review assignment enables students to provide feedback on another student’s assignment submission. Peer reviews allow communication between students and help students master the concepts of a course and learn from each other.

A few of the key features of Canvas Peer Reviews include:

  • Can show students’ names or be completed anonymously
  • Rubrics can be included to ensure consistent review criteria
  • Manual or Automatic distribution
  • Available for Discussions and Assignments

Peer Review in Canvas Video Tutorials

This video shows the steps to set up Peer Review in a Canvas Discussion.

This video shows how an assignment that has been peer-reviewed by another student appears in the Canvas Speedgrader.

This video shows how to grade the peer review with a separate, no-submission assignment:

Prepare Students for Peer-Review Success

  • Students will need clear guidance about the tasks involved.
  • Students may be hesitant to find fault with a peer's writing, and clear instructions for critique can help them overcome this hesitation.  Consider providing a rubric to guide them.
  • The Peer Review area can confuse students unless they know how to navigate.
    • Include this Student Canvas guide: How do I submit a peer review to an assignment?
    • Create a simple how-to video where you share your screen and walk through the process.
    • Include a sample peer-reviewed assignment so students know what is expected of them and the feedback 'norm.'
