Adding OER to Your Canvas Course
Congratulations on adopting OER resources to include in your class.
The next step is to get those resources into your Canvas Shell. Generally, you have three options:
Embedding a Source
In this case, you may be turning a source into a content page or using embedding HMTL code. These options depend on the original source location and the license agreement. Canvas has a built-in PDF reader, so you can upload full textbooks, but you must check their accessibility.
Linking to a Source
You can also link to the source on another website. In this case, you need to include a descriptive link to the outside website.
Using a "Reader"
Some OER textbooks, like those in LibreText, offer a "reader" on their website as an alternative to a downloadable PDF. Sometimes these can be embedded and sometimes they require you to link to their website.
Final Steps:
Whichever method you choose to use, you must be sure to include the correct attribution (we ask students to cite their sources, and this is a great way to model that action for them).
You are also responsible for confirming that a source is accessible. Check out our resources on accessibility here.
If you have questions about Canvas or need help formatting your content, contact COC's Online Education Links to an external site. team.
