Welcome to the College of the Canyons EMT Orientation! 

COC’s EMT Program has an outstanding record of first-time pass rates for the National Registry of EMTs Exam. Our graduates work for fire departments, EMS agencies, and hospitals all over the region.

Program Courses

All 3 courses must be taken (and passed) in the same semester to be eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs exam.

  • EMS-101 (Lecture) 5 credits, T
  • EMS-101L (Lab) 2 credits, WTH
  • EMS-102 (Practicum) 1.5 credits + 32 hours of clinical shifts, dates vary

Program Prerequisites

  • Legal
    • Must be at least 18 years old on the first day of class (must show valid government-issued photo ID)
    • Must have a social security number (SSN) or ITIN
    • Must have a clean legal history
  • Academic
    • EMS-100 (EMS Foundations) and HLHSCI-249 (Medical Terminology) are STRONGLY recommended.
    • If you are a recent high school graduate or are new to college, or if you are a Fire Tech major, please talk to one of our counselors before taking EMT.
  • Students will be working in the field as EMTs during the course and will be expected to participate in patient care during traumatic and potentially dangerous situations, including, but not limited to: active shootings, vehicle accidents, domestic violence, sexual assault, and situations involving the death of adults and children. Students must have the emotional maturity and physical stamina to work in this environment.

Orientation Information

Students MUST attend an Orientation session before they can register for EMT. Students MUST sign up for Orientation through the EMT website. Access codes are sent to students' My.Canyons email address the morning of the Orientation session. Attendance at Orientation does not guarantee a spot will be open in the Program.

Orientation Dates:

  • April 30, 2026 7-9pm
  • May 18, 2026 1-3pm

Additional Requirements

Step 1: Outside Courses

  • Make photocopies of these documents - never submit originals!
  • Checklist 2
    • Fill out the top of the checklist (follow the directions)
    • Use a paperclip to attach your FEMA certificates in the order shown on the checklist
  • A copy of your CPR card and Fire Safety card will be attached to Checklist 3 (see below)

Step 2: Medical Requirements

Must be completed within 6 months of Program start date.

  • Complete in this order:
    • Tuberculosis testing (MUST provide lab results)
      • One Quantiferon Gold lab test OR
      • Two-step skin test (requires four doctor’s visits)
      • Make photocopies of the lab results or print them from your online patient portal
    • Titers (blood test for antibodiesMUST provide lab results) for:
      • Hepatitis B
      • Measles
      • Mumps
      • Rubella
      • Varicella
      • Make photocopies of the lab results or print them from your online patient portal
    • Booster shots and Vaccinations (MUST provide medical records from clinic)
      • Booster shots for any low titers PLUS
      • Tdap shot (within the last 9.5 years)
      • Current flu shot (given since August of current school year) plus the flu attestation form 
      • Any Covid shot since 2021
      • Make photocopies of the lab results or print them from your online patient portal
    • Physical (MUST be documented on our form)
    • Checklist 3
      • Gather all of the photocopies for your TB test results, antibody (titer) test results, vaccinations records, and physical
      • Fill out the top portion of Checklist 3 (follow the directions)
      • Use a paperclip (no staples!) to attach all of the documents to the checklist in the order shown on the checklist
      • Attach photocopies of your CPR and Fire Safety Cards and your EMT ID Badge (see below) in the order shown on the checklist

Step 3: Background check and Drug Test

MUST be through our provider.  May be done up to 6 months before Program start date. 

Step 4: Forms

These are fillable forms that require Adobe Acrobat. Download and save forms to your desktop, then open from desktop to complete. Free computers and support are available in the TLC and Library on both campuses.
